Under moderate to frequent supervision of the Pathologist, Laboratory Director, Laboratory Supervisor, and Medical Technologists, the Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant is responsible for collection of specimens such as blood, urine and sputum from wards or directly from the patient, performance of general organization and clean-up projects such as filing, retrieving previous reports, computer input, washing dishes, cleaning counters, etc., handling legal cases such as paternity blood draws, drug screens, jail visits; answering telephones and taking messages, fulfilling new procedures or responsibilities as required by the laboratory. These procedures exclude any which are performed only by licensed personnel under state licensure regulations. 

  • Education:
    High school graduate or equivalent preferred Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred
  • Experience:
    1 year as a phlebotomist; drawing neonates, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics, hospital experience preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:
    Required: Intelligence - Ability to understand instructions. Verbal - Excellent customer relations skills. Numerical - Mathematical skills at the high school graduate level. Clerical Perception - Ability to perceive and record pertinent written or verbal material. Motor Coordination - Ability to coordinate eyes, hands and fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed. Precision and Accuracy - Ability to be correct, exact, careful and as error-free as possible. Computer skills - Ability to correctly and efficiently utilize laboratory and hospital computers. Language Skills - Ability to convey, verbally and in written form, correct and clear communications. This job may require the employee to be responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients of all ages, including neonate, child, adolescent, and geriatric. Consequently, the employee must be competent in the interpretation of a patient's self-report or behavior, and this information must be interpreted with an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. The treatment of patients should be individualized and should reflect an understanding of the developmental needs and range of treatment needs for each patient. (See "Competency Assessment" policy)
