Patient Care Tech - ICU
PRN, as Needed
The Patient Care Tech assists the RN and LPN with patient care as requested, including assistance with lifting, turning, ambulating, and bathing of patients. He/she communicates care given and problems identified to an RN. Maintains a safe aesthetic patient care environment. This job may require the employee to care for patients of all ages, including adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
The Patient Care Tech may be required to provide close observation (sitter) if necessary for patients who are not able to be adequately cared for with the established fall prevention interventions.
Works under frequent supervision and performs other duties as assigned.
Core competencies: Restraint Use, Falls, Age Specific, Compliance and computerized annual required education (HealthStream); additional competencies as defined by Department Director.
Optional : If IV Certified/EMT and obtains 5 successful IV starts observed and documented by an RN, may perform peripheral IV insertion. Nurses will be responsible for checking patency prior to use per hospital policy.
A. Education: High school graduation or GED preferred.
B. Experience: Prefer 6 months experience, CNA, or nursing school student or nurse aide class. Must have IV Certification/EMT if performing peripheral IV insertions.
C. Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities: CPR required by completion of the unit-specific orientation and before working independently. This job may require the employee to be responsible for the care of patients of all ages, including adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Consequently, the employee must be competent in the interpretation of a patient's self-report or behavior, and this information must be interpreted with an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. The care of patients should be individualized and should reflect an understanding of the developmental needs and range of care needs for each patient.
