Job Descriptions:

  • Demonstrates ability to process cytology/Microbiology specimens for screening. Accessions, handles and processing specimens (i.e. fluids, tissues, liquid based PAP, cellblock) as appropriate through self-organization, verification of specimen identification, assuring proper fixative or preservatives are used, utilizing a basic knowledge of stains, fixative and reagents. Follows all lab policy/procedure pertinent to tasks performed with minimal error. Utilizes appropriate action with inadequate or faulty specimen process and troubleshoots as needed and with assistance if required. Produces high quality slides/specimens for evaluation by a Cytotechnologist and/or Pathologist and Microbiology.
  • Non-Technical Duties. Assists with maintaining filing systems of slides, blocks, specimens, reports, requisitions. Prepares reagents and chemicals as needed. Utilizes clerical skills to perform job functions with minimal errors. Assists with training of new associates as needed. Handles specimens/slides/logs/worklists appropriately and with confidentiality. Assists with point of care testing and/or reception/front desk/phlebotomy duties as assigned. Assists/performs patient registration duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Utilizes equipment according to departmental guidelines, maintaining all equipment as per guidelines and assuring all equipment and supplies are maintained in appropriate working order. Evaluates and utilizes inventory appropriately, assists with inventory control as needed. Utilizes computers as appropriate for the performance of work tasks.
  • Maintains a neat and clean work area. Disposes of tissues and waste appropriately, cleans bench areas and equipment, restocks supplies as appropriate, maintains the washroom and performs washroom functions as appropriate.
