General Summary: The Trauma Services Advanced Practice Provider participates in and manages the Trauma Services and Acute Surgical Care team (TACS). They will provide expert knowledge in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for the trauma services patients. Additionally, the Trauma APP will assist in facilitating Trauma Department activities, including in-service education, patient/family education, performance improvement and outreach education and trauma education as needed.

Essential Functions:

  1. Functions as an APP involving diagnosis and initiation of treatment for trauma patients in collaboration with Trauma Attending.
  2. Serves as a contact person for nursing staff, medical staff, social service, pastoral care and other hospital departments regarding the management of trauma service patients
  3. Coordinates care from Emergency department through inpatient care.
  4. Completes daily progress notes on general trauma service patients
  5. Performs and documents tertiary patient assessment on all new general trauma service admissions within 24-48 hours.
  6. Collaborates with rounding general trauma surgeon daily.
  7. Facilitates disposition of general trauma service patients by coordinating care with ancillary services, patient and family.
  8. Orders and evaluates results of lab, x-ray and other diagnostic tests as indicated.
  9. Prescribes and recommends prescriptions of medication and other treatment according to established federal and state regulations and requirements.
  10. Rounds with general trauma surgeon on all TACS service floor patients daily.
  11. Attends specific multidisciplinary floor rounds when available.
  12. Prepares patient and family for discharge, and assess with case management on any discharge needs.
  13. Completes discharge summary notes with general trauma surgeon as needed to increase patient throughput.
  14. Maintains professional competence through supervision, continuing education and other relevant learning experiences.

Misc. Functions :

  1. Assist the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manger as needed to maintain State of Colorado designation requirements as well as American College of Surgeons verification requirements.
  2. Assists with learning needs assessments, formal and informal for pre-hospital personnel, nurses and physicians within SMMC and Regional area
  3. Plan, implement and evaluate education offerings to meet the needs for pre-hospital personnel, nurses and physicians within SMMC and Regional area
  4. Provide policy and procedure education to those who interface with the TACS program
  5. Performs other duties as assigned by the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager

Performance Improvement: Incorporates performance improvement into ones professional practice

  1. Participates in Trauma Committees- this includes Trauma M&M and Trauma Multi-disciplinary Operations Committee
  2. Informs Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager of performance improvement issues
  3. Communicates with transferring facilities regarding patient care.

Education, Experience and Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  1. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with Master's Degree. Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner by the Board of Nursing for the State of Colorado OR graduate from an accredited physician assistant program required.
  2. Minimum of 3-5 years' experience in trauma critical care or emergency department setting.
  3. NP :
    1. Current Colorado Registered Nurses License
    2. Licensure of Certification as a clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner in the state of Colorado
  4. PA:
    1. Colorado Physician Assistant license required
    2. National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certification required
  1. Current ACLS and ATLS completion within one year of hire.
  2. Written agreement (prescribing agreement) with physician based on standards established by the Colorado Nurses Association and the Colorado Medical Association in a Memorandum of Understanding that defines the delegated responsibilities related to the prescription of drugs and therapeutic devices.
  3. Interpersonal skills necessary to instruct and maintain effective contacts with a variety of health care personnel, patients and patients families.
  4. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  5. Experience in understanding and usage of computers, including the Microsoft Office suite, as well as the ability to learn applications relevant to the position
